Delay at playback!

Recommended Posts

When I open a sequence and press play there is a delay. The delay happens every time I play a different sequence. I am running Vista on an HP.

I had that same problem and probably drove people from LOR crazy with my complaining about it last year at this time. It even affected the show with all the time it took to load each sequence the first time through the show each night. I was sure it was a problem with the software but no one could help me eliminate the issue. This past spring I replaced my old computer and those problems magically went away. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but that is the only solution I found. I'm talking the difference between the software, especially the sequence editor, bogging down and today it screams along as fast as I can push the buttons. Good luck.

I have noticed this the first time I open a sequence and play it. I have always thought that it was LOR opening up windows media player behind the scenes. After first play it does not usually happen again.

I notice this on my old laptop and not so much on my newer PC, both my machines are XP.

So when you say different sequence does that really mean first time in the sequence editor?

What I do is open lightorama, right click to open sequence editor, open any sequence and there is a lag. when I close that sequence and open another and press play there is a lag. I thought it maybe my computer. This is what I have, figured it was plenty fast.
2.8ghz prosessor
3.00 gb ram
32 bit vista
Will this cause problems when I start running my show? Can I add more ram and fix the problem?

Can someone tell me if a few simple up grades to my computer may help. Thanks, Donny

Is your hard drive nearly full?

Have you defragmented lately?

Have you run a disk cleanup?

Minimize items in your task bar to the right near the clock. If you need to run msconfig and limit what is all loaded at start up. Some of these items will hog your ram.

not even close 290GB free of 456GB

Have you defragmented lately?
yes, two days ago

yes, two days ago

I also just removed items from start, then restarted and still a lag before sequence runs.
Will more RAM help or does the processor determine how fast things react.

What I upgraded from was also a 2.8 GHz processor. Mine was a Celeron, though, and the motherboard would only go to 1 G of RAM, so YMMV...

George what specs did you upgrade to?

I don't have the exact specs handy, but it is a mid-line HP model, dual core with 4G RAM. I wish I had done it a year sooner...

That is what I am trying to determine, is it my computer which has plenty of memory or is it VISTA!!

When in the sequence editor and hitting play on a song, I notice about a .05 second delay from when I hit play until the song starts. In that time, though, I also see the CPU usage and RAM usage go up, so I'm guessing (complete random guess, too) that it's loading the sequence up to play.

The music and timings/events, however, are not affected, so I don't worry about it.

The shows run on an older XP machine with less memory and CPU than my main machine. (Which is Vista, btw.) I don't notice any issues when the show is running.

How long of a delay are you getting between hitting play, and the song starting?

It takes 20 seconds the first time I try and play a sequence after I first open LOR and the sequence editor. After that the songs start pretty fast. Its just the initial sequence after the editor is open. I just don't want this to effect my show.

Donny,

The show player uses significantly less resources than the Sequence Editor, so it shouldn't be an issue. (I said 'shouldn't' .. stranger things have happened.)

I would set up a quick test to see what is going to happen. Go ahead and create a show, and schedule them to run. Hook everything up next to the computer and see what happens.

I remember a post from some time ago where (I think) Bob had found that Windows Media Player was doing some unnecessary checking and making a change to WMP's settings the issue was resolved. I will check with Bob to see if he remembers this.

Just set a show and everything ran fine. The only time mine is slow is on initial start up. I think it will be ok!
Thanks Don for the suggestion on building a show. I really needed to see that show run to get me re-excited about sequencing! THANKS!!

Donny, my computer started doing the same thing last year after the updates that came out last year. It was REALLY annoying! I ran my show and didn't have any lags, just when I was in the sequence editor.

I have since reformatted that computer and reinstalled windows because LOR would not run at all after another update. Reinstalling windows fixed that.

Now I am running 2.8.8 and it will lag sometimes when I run the sequence editor for the first time but doesn't do it again. If you'll open the task manager before you start LOR, you can see your Ram and CPU run very high. I think it's the sequence editor getting all it's settings set. I have tried starting my computer after turning off everything in startup but the sequence editor still does the same thing.

I wouldn't worry about it.
