Donny M. Carter Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I cannot afford a new laptop, but was thinking about using a portable hard drive to do sequencing when I am out of town on different available computers then transfering the infor back to my show computer when I returned home. What does everyone think about that idea? Please tell me.
jem5136 Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Hi,Instead of buying an external hard drive, you could get a Flash Drive and do the same thing with it. A 2-4 GB would work nicely for music and sequences, and they run about $20 at Wal-Mart.Just my two cents,Jesse
ErnieHorning Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 The flash (or hard) drive would only allow you to transfer sequences since LOR doesn't allow you to run from the flash drive or install it on an endless number of PC's.
Donny M. Carter Posted June 13, 2010 Author Posted June 13, 2010 Can I use the external hard drive the way I want?

ErnieHorning Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 LOR has to be install on each computer that you intend it on using. You have a license to install it a limited number of times. You could edit a sequence on two different computers by setting them up the same way. Then you could plug in the external storage device and edit the sequence in the same location. You could also just copy the sequence to the local hard drive. This way you would have a backup if you messed up the sequence and wanted to get back the the previous point.
Cray Augsburg Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 You would still have to install the sequencer software on any of the other PCs you planned to use. Out of the box, you can install it on only five different machines. So . . .your idea would work, but "only" if the other machines had the LOR software on them.Cray
Donny M. Carter Posted June 13, 2010 Author Posted June 13, 2010 I want to copy my show computer hard drive to the portable hard drive and when I plug in to other computers, just open the correct hard drive.
Cray Augsburg Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Donny:You can't simply run the sequencing software from the hard drive (at least I for sure don't know how you can do it). You have to actually install it on the computer on which you are going to work. Once you have done this, you have to activate it through LightORama. THIS will take away one of the five "seats" you get when you buy the software.Cray
ErnieHorning Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 BTW, once you've installed LOR on a computer and are done using it, you can un-install it and regain the seat.
Donny M. Carter Posted June 13, 2010 Author Posted June 13, 2010 What i'm trying to understand is can I load my entire hard drive from my show computer onto a portable hard drive, Move the portable to a different computer and it be like I was still working on my show computer.

Never mind that every time you load it on a different computer you are going to have to resolve driver conflicts and other ever changing variables.I'm not a Windows expert, but I really don't think this is an option.
garyfunk Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 You could use Virtual Box. Then you can just mount your system on any computer.

I cloned the hard drive unto a 500 GB external hard drive and replaced the original hard drive with this cloned hard drive and that works great. I upgraded it with more ram too.On The Other Hand.......At work (or wherever) you could download the demo version onto a computer.............if at work or wherever approves of it. Then copy (only) the Lor 2 sequences unto a external hard drive. You can have peace of mind knowing that only the demo version of Lor 2 is downloaded.Just a thought.
Donny M. Carter Posted June 14, 2010 Author Posted June 14, 2010 Think i'm gonna buy a laptop!!! Thanks very much for the help.
jem5136 Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 If if were you I would get a netbook. I use one, and they work great for light shows, and they don't cost much. I got mine for under $250 including tax and shipping.Jesse
stanward Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Netbooks are extremely affordable! Also, I forgot the links, but there are many sites on the net to get extremely cheap computers. They don't have OS' installed, nor the driver CDs, etc.Can anyone assist with links or keyword searches?
Guest wbottomley Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Here's an example of using a netbook with LOR: The sequencer is the resource hog. So, if it will handle that, then a show is a breeze.
