jimswinder Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Started putting my lights on my Weber tree today, and right away was wishing they made (or do they?) a single string of lights that had four colors (RGBW) that could be individually controlled, where each color had their own plug end.Because of what I want to achieve I will have to zip tie together 4 strings of C6 lights, one of each color (Red, Green, Blue, White).Obviously it's too late for me, but was wondering if anybody had ever seen a single string of lights with each color that could be individually controlled...other than a CCR?Edit:Oh..was also wondering, since I just noticed, why do the red strings only have 3 of the capacitors/resistors? (the big round things, one at each end and one in the middle) and the other colors have 4 (one on each end and two between the ends)? Attached files
Don Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Pre-Made? No, I have not found anything like that on the market, especially with the C6's.I did, however, make some 'super strings' of C6's for my roof line, windows and garage over the past two years. They look very good, mean I only have to put up a string of lights once. You can see them at WonderlandChristmas.com -> Pictures -> 2009 Behind the Scenes. (The clips I used to help hold the lights together are from CleanerSupply.com.)

Don Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 No worries, Jim.Had them on the roof and windows, only. Didn't use them for trees, or anything like that. Most of it was for ease of construction, part of it so 17ft was really 17ft, and 3rd ... they just look right at the 4" spacing that most C6 LED's use.
jimswinder Posted May 29, 2010 Author Posted May 29, 2010 I WISH it was consistent 4" spacing...with mine some are 4", some are 3"...found out REALLY fast it was nearly impossible to make it consistent and look equal.Don't think anyone will notice (hopefully) from 60' away. lol
Don Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 That would be very frustrating! Must be a difference in where the LED's came from, because I don't ever recall them not being an exact 4".
edvas69 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 This is about as close as ive seen in what your looking for, They are a string of individually controlled RGB LEDs. You can apply online for a quote. Im not sure on price but they have been used in a mega tree to great effecttake a look here http://response-box.com/rgb/
Dennis Cherry Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Here is what your can do with Super Strings in your display. I had 2 4x4 cedar posts, one is 7 feet long and the other is 12 feet. Using some 1x2's I made these to strap on the posts on 3 sides. Attached files
Cray Augsburg Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Jim:Don's superstrings look pretty good from the pictures he pointed to. Perhaps the neatest (as in tidy) approach I have seen is from Chuck Moore. For his mega tree, he strung together four (oh heck, maybe it was five) strings of LEDs for each strand. He laid the strings and twisted/untwisted as he went so that all of the lights were pointing in the same direction. Then he cable tied the bundle between each and every pair of bulbs. I can only imagine it took a great deal of time, but it looked great, and the result was worth it. I know the term "anal retentive" comes to mind here, but the lights formed a nearly perfect straight line. I had the opportunity to see this tree at the recent St. Louis mini and was totally impressed. It looked very much like Dennis Cherry's light bars above, except that the spacing was even (if not equal) between all the bulbs, and there was no wood -- just free strands for use on the mega tree.CrayP.S. If you consider doing this, go to monoprice.com for a great price on cable ties.
cmoore60 Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Jim,If you will send my your email addy in a private message. I will sent you several photos of my mega tree setup.Yes I am the Chuck that was mentioned.Chuck

LOLThanks for the link!!
Guest wbottomley Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Here's an alternative. This approach is the way I'm going. Then, you have 16.5 million colors instead 4-5.http://response-box.com/rgb/I hope to incorporate one mega tree this year.
edvas69 Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 This may be somthing that might interest you, these are 8 metre 80 RGB LED strings from Ray Wu's Online shop, im a bit interseted in getting a few of these for myself they are about $4 per string and you can also get them in 10m, 15m and 30m lengths, shipping may vary depending on where you are located.http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/209888808-301828172/LED-String-Light-8-meter-long-RGB-color-total-80pcs-leds-AC85-260V-input-.html
Cray Augsburg Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Jim:Where did you look on monoprice.com? Under Cable Management on the main screen, 4" ties go for 44 cents per hundred bag in a quantity of 1, 41 cents for quantities of 2 - 9, and 37 cents for 10 - 19. And they're available in several colors. Just bought several thousand myself. I haven't come across a better deal on ties, yet.Cray
jimswinder Posted May 30, 2010 Author Posted May 30, 2010 Yikes...but shipping to US puts them up to $19.00 each!!Look interesting though...
