GS Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 USB to 485 (ethernet/cat5)I have an extra Linksys USB200M, specs in link below, will this work for LOR connect ?I don't want to damage the controller.http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/USB200M?referrer=www.linksysbycisco.comThanks,Glenn
Don Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 A quick glance at the site tells me that the device you linked to is a Network Adapter. There are ways to save money with your LOR display, but this is not one of them. The Ethernet protocol (which runs your internet connection) is not compatible with the LOR units.Purchase the USB adapter from Light-O-Rama.
Max-Paul Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 GS,Dont let the connector fool you. The Rj-45 connector is almost 100% of the time used for Ethernet such as the internet. But I did say almost. There are a few occasions such as this that LOR uses it to transport RS-485 which is different voltages and the format of the data is different than ethernet. As pointed out, the device that you have linked to, is a USB to ethernet.
Steven Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Plugging that device into a LOR controller will almost certainly not damage the controller, as Ethernet voltages are less than RS-485 voltages. However, there is a possibility that it will damage the Linksys Network Adapter, as it's not expecting the +10VDC that is present on the LOR network. There is also a zero chance that it will work.
