Cody Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Hey, I have never done Light-O-Rama before and would like to do it. Is it complicated?:? If at all possible, I want to do 48 channels. Can anyone help me by posting something that has EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW? I want to buy on of the sets where the card is put together- no soldering- just put on the cords and such of the Planet Christmas version. Then, to save money- Buy some kits that require soldering. THANK YOU!!!!!!
Terry Hurrle Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 There is a sale coming up around the end of June or early July. Whether you buy 1, 2 or 3 controllers buy the advanced software. While you are waiting you can download the demo version of software and start your sequencing now. You can get copies of sequences from many members the LOR forum, P.C. and other places. Pick brains. Most of the long time members here and on P.C. will help you. If you think you will be wanting 48 channels you will want more in a short time because you will find many ideas you want in your show. Start slow and be patient. I too am new but have learned a lot from the forums and still learning everyday.Terry
wallleyes Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Wanting more channels NEVER ends.I started out saying i was going to start this year with 32 channels.I am now up to 210 channels and trying to restrain myself.Kind of scary with another sale coming up.Ask away on the questions as there is so many great people here wanting to help.Welcome aboard.
Don Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Cody, Back in November 2009 I wrote an article where I try to give people a roadmap for starting the first animated display. You can read it here. I usually advise people to plan their displays carefully, and have an order to the display. A lot of people want to start sequencing, so they do so without have a solid idea of what their display is going to look like. As a result they have to re-program when things change. Layout your display early. Make double (or triple) sure you are within electrical loads of the controllers. Be sure you have enough power to run your display. These are but some of the simple planning ideas that if done first could save you frustration later.
Cody Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 Thanks you guys!!! I have already laid out my plans and have made sure of everything. I want to do a 20' mega tree, 4 leaping arches, and 9 mini trees. How low do the prices usually come to in a sale?
NWSanta Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Hey Cody,Having Lightorama stuff is like having a boat it's always 2-foot-i-tiss.I always want more channels. The sale if I remember correctly is about 10-15% off on most items and the PC Stuff is the best bang for the buck as far as I'm concerned... Looking forward to adding 32 more channels to my show this year...2-foot-i-tiss strikes again.. Don't hesitate to ask questions The crew here is awesome and the support staff at LOR is amazing...-Evan
redsea300 Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Hey Cody, It is an addiction. My first year was going to be 64 channels. By the time it hit the front yard it was 176. Year 2 was 273. This year it is 406. I am wondering if it will ever end. If you want look at my website's video and pick something, I will send you the programing to get you started. You can email through the website.Good LuckDon

I have mini leaping arches in the basement for practice.
jimswinder Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 You cannot use "budget" and "LOR" in the same sentence...unless it is "I blew my 401k savings budget on LOR stuff"...
Greg Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 It is a very addictive hobby, but once you see the faces of the little ones it is all worth it. Not that it is a bad thing but I refer this as my "hole" hobby, in that it is a hole I keep throwing my money into;)
lightzilla Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 I force myself to have self control, and having 0 dollars in any account makes it more easy for me to simply keep what I have.So basically, my show well not change much this coming December except I am adding 16 more channels. If you have the bucks spend it, and if not, then go with what you can afford and not with what you cannot afford. Don't go in debt.Between 48 - 64 channels is a good starting point..........and yes you can have self control.

EDIT:and a big thanks to all the Canadians that buy Made In USA!!Did you know that Canada is lending Michigan $500 million dollars to start a bridge from Detroit to Windsor? Now is the time for Canadians to "Buy Made in The USA".Canadians are bad at going into debt , but I prefer not too, but if I had the bucks I would add even more channels.
jimswinder Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 lightzilla wrote:Did you know that Canada is lending Michigan $500 million dollars to start a bridge from Detroit to Windsor?...he left out the part where it's going to cost another billion dollars to finish it... lol
Terry Hurrle Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Not a problem. The current administration will give them that much.
Max-Paul Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 jimswinder wrote: You cannot use "budget" and "LOR" in the same sentence...unless it is "I blew my 401k savings budget on LOR stuff"... Cody,Jim should know. Look at pile of controllers that he is just about done with. Jim, didn't you just buy those this past 1st of the year sale?

They need to fork out the rest to get their half finished.Canada gets the money back in toll fees.If we all had that kind of money we could buy freighter loads of controller, lights and countless other things. lolBy the way Jim where or what are you using that 4 controller box on............a mega tree perhaps?
jimswinder Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 lightzilla wrote:By the way Jim where or what are you using that 4 controller box on............a mega tree perhaps?Actually that is just 1 of 9 Enclosures. 5 will have 3 controllers (48 Channels) and 4 will have 4 Controllers (64 Channels). The 5 - 48 Channel Enclosures will be under each of my five mini trees and will control the mini trees, stars, mini arches, mega arches and the bottom half of my "Streamers".1 - 64 Channel Enclosure will be under my mega tree and control it, a star, some strobes, snowflakes, eave lights and window lights. The other 3 - 64 channel Enclosures will be under my Weber Tree and control it, a star, some strobes and the top half of my "streamers".My "streamers" are my main channel hog...with it using 216 channels...

I take it that this will require custom fit extension cords to reach everything or will this method actually help cut back on extension cords?Certainly well make the yard look neater not having 25 controllers all over the yard. It is a good idea.
