zman
What is the benefit, or purpose of the USB - RS485 Isolated adapter over the RS485B.In looking at the web page there is a subtle difference in the description. The Iso states "several large networks".Just curious.
-klb-
The USB-485B creates an electrical connection between your PC, and the controller RS485 network. The USB-485-ISO does not create an electrical connection between your PC and the RS-485 network. I can't remember if it is thousands, or tens of thousands of volts of isolation potential between the PC and network. Basically, it will prevent your PC from being connector tying signal ground on all your data networks together. Where this really adds value is if part of your display is on a separate utility feed than rest of the display. For example, we use one on the city show for the network that runs to the park, as all of the park is fed from a separate utility transformer. The isolation will also help reduce the odds of a lightning strike in/near your display taking out your PC. Of course, if your network cable is directly hit, this unit does not provide enough isolation to save the PC, but for a lot of cases, it should improve the odds of survival. Max-Paul
and if I may add. Something more possible is that some how 110VAC should come in contact with your cat 5 on the right wires. It will not fry your computer. Cant really say the same for your controllers. But does provide some protection for the PC.
grandad
The best way to completely isolate your PC from the outside world is to use ELLs of course.Martin
