Pixie16 Setup and Configuration step by step

The easiest way to test your RGB order is the Pixel Console in the HU. Once in the pixel console turn on the red leds only if blue lights up then the first color is B, Then turn on the green leds only if red lights up then you know your order will be BRG.

YES! What Mr. P said.

I JUST had to go through that process after FINALLY getting my Pixie II working. It's a new one with the dip switches. Upon arrival, since I was start everything from a clean slate this year (new computer dedicated to LOR only, first foray into RGB),  I updated to the  latest firmware (and SE 4.4.0). Pixie and Ribbons were NOT co-operating. I re-flashed the prior firmware and everything started working. Even being able to control the ribbons through HU. EXCEPT the lights were not responding to RGB. After going through the colors schemes 1 by 1, I figured out that they were BGR.

I have to add that i tried the reboot method and setting the color to the first one that came up but the colors seemed to shift on me.  I went through the 6 options at least three times. No matter what order i chose, the red an blue swapped.  I contacted the LOR help desk and they said that the controllers from gen 1 and Gen 2 on the pixie 8's were different and they are sending me a whole new controller.  I asked what difference that would make because the new board in the controller is not working now and it must be something in the setup but they insist it will correct the issue.  I think maybe the cords are wired differently.  I will let you know if the problem is solved Monday night.  For now, I have blue Christmas balls and red snowflakes.  Thanks for your help.

I received a new box from LOR today with a 2nd generator pixie 8 controller and power supply.  I set the dip switches and hooked everything up.  I ran my test sequence and the unit works perfectly.  I didn't even look at the new controller with the hardware utility. Maybe updating the firmware would have worked.  Love the Smokies!!

You may still need the HU to set the RGB color order.

The problem with using the dip switches and it happensnall the time.

The user forgets so when he attempts to set the controller to a new unit ID and can’t they start panicking. LoL

I have been working on mine for awhile and I have a question.   I have been running 48 channels through a LOR Show time Director.  I wanted to run the 16 25 pixie tree with the set up I already have.   So I upgraded to pro, watched some great tutorials and have created a good sequence on the Pixie Editor which took some time.  So I can play the sequence and see a visualization of my show in PE but I cant figure out how to get the show Ive created to load on to an SD card to run through my show time director.   It seems like the write up here works good for running from a PC but it seems like running through a show director is different.  Is there different steps for the director?  Did I get ahead of myself by creating a PE sequence, or do I have to start over?  Also on the unit ID,  does it conflict with the other standard controller if the pixie controller isnt reassigned?   Thank You!

What controllers?

What Gen controllers?

What unit IDs for those controllers?

How many networks?

What Director?

The answers to the above will help net you an self educated reply.

This writeuP is actually to configure the pixie series controllers and little to do with how to play a sequence but I and the others will do my best to help if I can.

The one thing I cannot assist you with is S5.

Thanks for answering and any help you can give me.   I found some info and this is what I have:  3 CTB16PCg3  Gen 3 controllers.  #1 controls a mega tree type prop. #2 controls 4 little trees #3 controls 2 arches    1 network    1 mDM-MP3 mini director.  I dont  think Im running s5   I am currently running a pre built LOR show through showtime central, but I have added a TSO song to it.

Thank you.

How are you setting the unit ID? Did you change the Dip Switch as indicated in my instructions?

Normally you wont get the "unknown device" unless you are on a much older version of S4 or earlier since the pixie wasn't built into the older version.

Getting conflicting info from your posts "I don't think I'm running S5". Your profile clearly says S5.

If you are running S5 how proficient with it are you? If you are proficient with S5 I can help you on the phone with setup. However I wont have all day. Now if you are running S4 I can have your config done on minutes.

I am even struggling with my profile.  I dont have s5.   Upon closer looking on the top bar of the pixie editor my version is only 4.2.10.  I thought upgrading to pro would automatically give me the correct version to do this.  I clearly am in over my head,  my wife talked me into getting this thing and it is causing some stress so instead of enjoying the season I am completely miserable.  I would be willing to compensate you for your time but I am also willing to put this on hold until next Christmas so I dont stress about it, I simply would like to figure it out so I didnt just waste a bunch of money.  So my next step is get an newer version of software and go through your steps again.   My question is on your write up is it written for running a showfrom a PC or will those exact steps also work for running a show from the show time director?

THank you,  I realize there are lots of people who need help and you seem to help many of them so I do appreciate your time, again even if i can get some steps going I would be happy just to make some progress to get ready for next year.

When did you upgrade to Pro? An upgrade gives you an automatic renewal so all you would have to do is download a newer version. You need at least version 4.3.18 for the software to recognize a Pixie.

On your first part, license level and version number are not related.    License level defines features of the software that you can use.   Version is simply an identifier of when the software was released.

Just want to say thanks for the info! I'd received a replacement Pixie 8, and because it was a new model, I hadn't paid attention to the dip switches. When I would assign an ID, it would only stick for a couple of minutes, and then I'd lose the unit on the network, and it would do weird, random stuff. Turns out it was resetting to ID01 and the following auto-assigned IDs, and picking up programming for other devices in my setup. Fixed the dip switches last night, and everything is working perfectly now.

Thanks for putting this together, and thanks for pointing me here from the other thread.

Unfortunately, I’m still stuck. My primary question at this point (I think) is if one of my controllers is not Gen 3, will I ever be able to run it on the Enhanced Network? Or is it a foregone conclusion I’m going to be running two networks?

I’ve already ordered an additional red dongle, but that’s a week out, so I’m trying to figure out if I can get my show running in the meantime.

For now, none of my lights will fire unless I take it back down to the non-enhanced network.

Thanks!

Sent you my contact info

To answer your question though. I read that with software suite version 4.40 and higher it is possible with a firmware update. However I have not tested nor seen anything official from LOR

DevMike any info on this?

By the way, I just wanted to give a shout out to JR. He took time out of his morning to hop on the phone with me to discuss the issues. We didn’t necessarily fix it (yet), but he helped me narrow down the variables.

What we we found is that the CBT16 definitely appears to be my choke point, and the Pixie8 CANNOT run outside of an Enhanced Network. There may be other ways to crack the egg, but I’m just going to split into two networks

Thanks JR!!! It was great meeting you.

What’s your HU version? My guess is you need to update your HU.

1) What controller? Dip Switches or not?

2) What is your actual license level? Normally you error would indicate your software version is incorrect. Depending on the controller will determine when that controller was added to the software version.

No such thing as updating the HU.

The Hardware Utility must be of a minimum version to use the pixel trees. I had literally the exact same problem last night and updating my LOR software version was the fix. No, you don’t update the HU individually, but that IS the source of the problem.
