I have purchased some chasing led rbg , some dumb rbg and some dumb white tape led lights. I also have a bunch of rope lights from the last few christmases . I want to get into the lightnorama game with fm transmitter. What is the minium I will spend?

Yeah, that's hard to tell. Your descriptions are a bit vague. Anything with low voltage will likely require pixel controllers or a DC controller, and normal lights will need a standard controller. Plus software, you're looking at several hundred dollars (assuming you don't go the DIY route) - I'd say $500-1000... And that doesn't include the time allowance for punching your computer, reconfiguring your setup and asking for help when things don't work.

It is worth it. It's a fun sort of frustration.

No it's not, I'm ready to take a sledgehammer to a CMB24 now.

Not to mention the emotional costs and the cost of invested time, divorce lawyers etc.! lol. I have about 8 hrs invested in just my "Tune to" sign already and I'm not done. Then my wife said I could've just bought a simple stake and put it in the ground. If it wasn't for her guidance, I don't know how I would have survived these 21+ yrs of marriage. (adjust your sarcasm meter if it didn't read that correctly!)

Just send it to me instead.  I'll make use of it for you.

I do feel bad for hijacking your thread. This is my first year as well. It seems as if getting started is a little more expensive with buying controllers, lights, signs, FM transmitters, etc. Not to mention the cost of possibly adding more outlets and things of that nature.  After the initial buy in, I think it would solely depend on what you planned on adding each year.  I would think a bare minimum would be $1k and that's probably being conservative.

When we started our lightshow for this year, we planned on spending no more than $1,500. . . . Well, over $6,500 later we still aren't done and ready. It's all the small things we forgot to add in like extension cords. FM transmitter, lights, infrastructure ect. . . It all depends on how good you are about self control. Best of luck, and don't get overwhelmed.
