pixcon 16 - where to begin?

Recommended Posts

Not sure what I did last night to get the first pixel to light up, but now i'm not getting anything to light up. I tried a different string, and a different port. I did upgrade my pixcon to the latest firmware (which could have been one of my issues last night). Now when I power on the pixcon the power light comes on and stays on, then the status led blinks slowly (show computer is off), when I push the factory ip button and hold it for three seconds then release the status led starts blinking fast and the power led stays the same.

Any advice?

How did you set up the board? Did you use the LOR assistant?

Either the string is bad, you have not correctly selected the Pixel Driver in the PixCon16 configuration, have not properly set normal speed/high speed in the PixCon16 config, or have wired your pixels to the connector incorrectly.

I setup the board using the network config (like it says to in the manual).

I have the board set to Static IP: 192.168.0.51

pixel setup is set to WS2811/12 with high speed unchecked (I tried with both unchecked and checked), Simple config, max 170 pixels per port, starting universe is set to 1, number of nodes per port is set to 170. channel order is set to rgb.

Misc: Firmware is 1.4.8, voltage on bank 1 is 12.2, bank 2 is 12.2.

Strips are from Holiday coro. they are INK1003 pixel protocol (2811 compatible). 60 led/60 ic per meter.

Color order is red/green/blue

The strip has 5 wires but only three going into the factory plug. The factory plug has a red, black, and green wire.

Per the package red is positive power, green is data out, black is 12v negative.

The two additional wires are a red/black which is connected to the black wire, and the other is a red wire connected to the other red wire. I assumed these were just so you could do a power injection (correct me if i'm wrong).

On the Pixcon 16 port connector: I have the red wire screwed into the 1 port, the green wire screwed into the 3 port, and the black wire screwed into the 4 port. I do not have the other two wires plugged in (maybe I need to?)

I've tried several different strips (four) and tried several different ports (four, guess I could try all of them).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if i'm doing something completely stupid and not catching it. This is my first time messing with RGB's, LOR products are so much easier with matched with other lor products.

Do you have them wired in the correct DIRECTION?   There is a front and back of a pixel string.

I assumed I wired the right side, but i'll try putting the plug on the other side see if that fixes the issue.

lol I've got to be doing something wrong. So I moved the plug to other side and nothing. I moved the plug back and now the first half of the strand comes on when I power up the card but it stays on (using the hardware tester it does not cycle through the colors). So at least one of my problems I'm assuing was a bad connection. But not sure why only half of the strand comes on or why its stuck on white. 2nd strand 2nd port same problem, only the first half of the strip is on and its white.

Does the physical number of pixels agree with what is set up on the board? Do you have another board to test your lights/connections?

Ok so I've got all of the pixels on changed it from max 170 pix to max 340 pix. (so I understand why only half of the strip was working). Still can't get the board to run the test cycle tho. Hope i'm not annoying anyone yet (feel like I have no idea what i'm doing).

Do you have another controller to test with?

Thank you so much for the help guys. I had unchecked highspeed on the controller. For some reason this caused all pixels to be fully on. I switched it back to highspeed and now the hardware test function is working perfectly.

I had a similar issue with the Advatek Pixlite 16 (same board) and it was the buffer chips that shorted out (my fault) The buffer chips are the long black chips on either side of the board. Only 1 on each side is used cause the other is for the Clock which isn't used on 2811. You can try moving the U7 and U8 chips to U9 and U10 but they are very fragile, I would first get a hold of LOR to see what they can do if anything.........I have 3 Pixcon boards I just had to send back for repair and they (LOR) had to send me new ones cause the old boards could not be fixed......I prefer the Falcon F16v2 board

U9 (bottom right) is the data chip for bank 2 and U10 (top left) is the data chip for bank 1.

U7 and U8 can be ignored as they are only for pixels that use a clock line.

Also, beware of the orientation when you replace chips.

Glad you got it fixed!!!!!

I am downloading Advatek assistant but when it shows the screen under select adapter the IP address is 192.168.0.1 I need 192.168.50. Also it states 0 Devices . How do I change to the correct IP address for my controller?

I believe the 192.168.1.50 is the Factory IP Address. You need to change the adapter setting s in Windows in order to have your computer within the same IP address as the Pixcon, I believe LOR has their own assistant as well. Its just like the Advatek Assistant but I think there are a few differences........

I have a problem I have my Alphapix controller hooked up. I downloaded the Advatek Lights assistant, However wghen I bring it up under the select adapter it does not show my controller at 192.168.0.50 instead it shows 192.168.0.50. It also shows no controller under the model. I can not refresh to my controller. Any suggestions please.

I've just received WS2811's from Ray and after figuring out on the Pixco16 that I have to select highspeed for them to work, I then found that these are not RGB rather GRB. I keep seeing issues like this, first with LPD6803's and now WS2811's. Am I doing something wrong?

Ok, I got them to work, sort of. By turning on the high speed mode, they came to life. Strange how once again, I run into issues with the programming type though...instead of RGB, they are GRB and these are WS2811's too. I saw this on LPD6803's a lot and different modes for different batches or manufacturers.
