CCR Replacement Ribbon

I'm toying with the idea of picking up some CCRs for this year, but I keep seeing issues with pixels not lighting up, whole colors not working, etc. Once the 2 year warranty is up, I'm concerned on the continued cost of these things. I see a replacement ribbon for sale by LOR for $170 at which price it starts becoming a toss-up on replacing the ribbon or just plain getting a new one.

My question is would we be able to use one of those cheap Chinese ribbons as a replacement after the warranty period (just throw out the cheap controller and use the ribbon or just get one of those bulk reels)? I'd much rather get a bulk reel of those for like $15-$20 than pay $170 to replace a ribbon, that way if something does go wrong, I'd have to buy over 10 replacements before I came up to the cost of a single LOR replacement ribbon. My measurements are pretty tight, so it's not like I can just take a pixel out, solder the two remaining pieces together and call it a day, otherwise I'd be all over that solution. So, has anyone been able to successfully pull something like this off? I've tried searching on here and PC, but I didn't really find much other than all the failures without too many solutions. Thanks for your time!

I think thats what some of the DIY guys use.

Not sure if you could connect a LOR controller to one of those ribbons.

It would be nice to know if you could

As long as you get the type with the same chip in it your LOR CCR controller will run it. I believe the chip is a 6803 chip in the strips....

Has anyone tried alternative, cheaper ribbons for sale on ebay or other websites? I need to replace a ribbon and do not want to pay the high price, but want to make sure it works and looks the same. Any comments or help is appreciated.

I bought some $40 6803 strips from China and they work fine, but they seem to be RBG, rather than RGB. Does anyone have a source for strips?

Couldn't you just swap the wires?

Do you have a link?

With pixels you will have to be able to switch colors with the software or use a controller that has the ability. Pixels only have 2 data wires, not RGB.

I wish it was as easy as swapping wires. So far, the only way is to change all my sequences and swap the channels for G&B.

I have heard from others that Ray Wu can special order these in RGB order, but you have to ask him up front. No extra cost, it seems.
