Their are numerous benefits and drawbacks to everything. The major benifit of cloud storage is off site backup. You can place items on 5 computers. If the house burns down all 5 copies are gone. Or remember what happened to Cracker, house was broken into and all of his sequences, photos ect disappeared. Photos of the kids growing up are not replaceable but are more sensitive than sequences.

You can encrypt your data say with truecrypt and backup the encrypted file to dropbox or another service. Down side to this is you have to download the entire truecrypt volume if you need a file but it does prevent dropbox from viewing your files.

Just a little fyi for some that may have been on the fence on the issue.

Which is fine - until DropBox or whichever "cloud" service you chose to use goes out of business and all your nice safe offsite stored files are gone with them.
Just look at some of the people and companies that are fighting to get their information back after Megaupload got shutdown. Unless you have deep pockets to hire an attorney to fight for you, you are pretty much done.

As I said, I have 4 computers and now a server in the house. I back up all my files from the machines onto the server and once a week I make a server backup onto a portable drive that goes to another location where I keep important papers and such so that they are safe.
Not a big deal to do and I am the only one who gets to se what I have or am storing.

Who is to say that DropBox or one of those won't take a peek at your files (of course our government would NEVER do something like that!) and they come across a picture of one of your kids in their underware or pajamas and decide that it is kiddie porn and turn you over to the authorities.
Sound unlikely or too incredible to believe? How many people on here work for a company that monitors your email usage or watches where you go on the net? It is becoming more and more common for companies to do as well as turn over any files to the authorities just because they "think" that there is a problem.

And I would not be so sure that just using an encrypt program will stop them from looking if they really want too. It just gives them another reason to wonder what you have in there!

I have some friends that work in the wonder world of security in DC so I get a lot of fun conversations with them over some of this. Most of the things in DC that are going on these days scares them!

Just my FYI for those who may be on the fence over this issue!

With Dropbox your files are automatically stored on any computer you have linked to your account. Thus, if you have a computer off-site running dropbox, and you place a copy in your dropbox folder, it will be uploaded to dropbox right away. Moments later, any computer linked to your account will then have a copy downloaded to it.

Dropbox could cease to operate 10 minutes later, and your files are still at home and at the remote site.

Speaking of encryption ... find the password. :)

I would not bother trying to get the data back assuming that they did not go belly up at the same time I lost everything at home. If it is stored in dropbox in a truecrypt volume they will not be looking at anything.

I have 4 pc's that back up to my server nightly, I wish I was as good about getting them to an offsite drive somewhere but I am not.

And just for the record I do not use dropbox if I did it would be encrypted before upload for sure.

I have Dropbox. Is there a way to designate where your sequence files go in the LOR software? I didn't see it as an option.

A longer version of this answer is here: http://syncxmas.com/zLrA9D

Close all of your running LOR programs. Using Windows Explorer, open up the directory that contains your LOR program files. This is typically, but not always, C:Program FilesLight-O-Rama. In that directory, there should be a file called LORPost.exe (it might show up as just "LORPost", depending upon how you have Windows set up). Run that file.

It will step you through a few dialogs. In one of them, it will ask you where you want LOR to store data files.

Don,

Are you sure about your above comments about dropbox? You say that if you import say pictures from your camera into your laptop while on vacation. And you exported those pictures from your laptop to drop box before returning home. And say you lost your laptop and drop box goes belly up. Then a few days later you go to your computer work station with the desktop computer. You will find your picture files on the desktop? From what I was reading above. You have a folder on say your "pictures" folder. Clicking on that folder takes you to your pictures folder on drop box. Its seamless, yet it is more like a redirect to a remote site.

At least that is the gist of what I thought those before your comment where saying. Frankly I am with the majority and will not allow others to make copies of my files. Lets say the photo I took of the columns at Mizzu quad. And decide to sell them. Well someone at drop box might be surfing my stuff and get the same idea. And I could not do a legal thing to stop them.. Heave forbid you have something sensitive in there.

Thanks that worked.

I use dropbox for my email folders and my Documents folder, I personally use Thunderbird or you can use Outlook and move your .pst folder for outlook or your Thunderbird profiles folder to the dropbox "local" directory and since I have 3 computers and my Android phone when I answer emails I don't need to BCC myself and if I create a word doc here at home and save it. when I go to work and power up my computer...there it is

and on my Android phone when I take a picture or shoot a video it is automatically uploaded to dropbox, a very nice convenience.

and if you set up your phone to send pictures via dropbox you get a free 500Meg upgrade...don't know how long that will last

and if your interested in getting dropbox, click this link

and you will get added storage..... and so will I :)

Don't use memory sticks, but SD cards to transfer my files between computers or an inhouse wireless network link to get them on the laptop that I use to troubleshoot when necessary.

As for online storage, I use Skydrive to also keep copies of all my stuff (sequences, their MP3 files), also where I share my sequences with others here, and the price is right, absolutely free as long as you have an Hotmail or Windows Live Mail account.

I am curious as to why you don't use memory sticks/jump drives, and use SD cards instead? Have you had issues with data storage on them, or is it just a personal preference issue?

Greg
