Alternative to Cosmic Color Ribbons

I am very interested in cosmic color ribbons but unfortunately, they're somewhat out of my price range. I've been doing a lot of research on RGB color strips and what not, but I keep coming across items very similar to CCR's for half the price such as this one http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=BARS&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FRGB_DC-83.htm. I somewhat understand how CCR's are programmed but I have absolutely no clue if 3rd party RGB's will work with LOR. I've also read that some people talk about 3rd party RGB's but they say "they will work with CCR's" meaning what?

your link is not any good...

but if they are half the price, I would guess that each LED is not programmable like the CCR...

guess what, i think your right. I don't believe you can program each individual led but I'm very new to RGB's. I updated the link so you should be able to go check them out.

yeah...per the description sounds like you have a choice of 83 patterns:

Control the sequence mode, chase legnth, and speed of 83 different dynamic chasing patterns from the RF Remote Controller or directly on the RGB Controller unit.

to bad they don't have a video...

See Page 3 of their manual:

So Jim, do you know if you can use 3rd party RGB strips? I have absolutely no clue how this works. I'd love for a admin to step in any time ;)

So let me get this straight. "dumb" RGBs can't chase but can switch colors and need a http://store.lightorama.com/cmdedcca2.html in order to work and "smart" strips would be like the CCR's? Also, if I run across a cheap smart strip, how would I connect it to my show if I can't usehttp://store.lightorama.com/cmdedcca2.html

They are other forums that discusses DIY ways to make other RGB products work. You might want to visit them and do some reading, lots of it.

at $40 I doubt they are that "intelligent"... :P

a 5050 strip is usually considered a "dumb" RGB strip...

Yep those are it. You buy a DC board from LOR, a power supply, and an enclosure for the board. Unfortunately, it takes 9channels instead of 3 like a "dumb" RGB string does

Actually Jim they are semi-intelligent. After reading a very long forum post about them, they do pretty much everything a CCR does except you can't control every led, but you can control every 3rd led. You can still do multiple color effects and chasing as you would with a CCR. If you go to the website and watch the video, you will see that the different colors come in sections of 3. This is because it is essentially 3 dumb strips put together to make one "semi-intelligent" strip. What I'm worried about though is programming.

then they are no where NEAR what a CCR ribbon can do... in my opinion...

If you watch the video, they are actually very similiar. I want to use them to replace my arches and thankfully I will be able to do that since I can control every 3rd led. If you want fine control, then yes I would go with the CCR'S but these will fit me just fine. Color changes, chasing, fading. Like I said, the only thing you can't do is control every led but you can do every effect the CCR'S do but half the cost

I don't see how those would make good looking arches. Marquee lights maybe, but not arches.

Maybe you don't know what CCRs can do.

This is not intelligent strip, its is a 9 channel dumb strip, it allows you to control every 3rd section so you can chases and such but will not achieve all the effects the CCR does. These also can come in common cathode and will not work with DC controllers in this arrangement, you need common anode

I have been using 5050s for the past 2 seasons. For those not familiar with them each module has 3 sets of LEDs (as each set is actually a R, G, and B LED extremely closely approximated, so all in all you have 9 individual LEDs (3 of each primary color) per 5050 module).
The only way you can get all the colors is to have a DMX mini-controller (about $7 from cheapdmx, etc)for each module, or you could run each module on an individual channel from a LOR DC board, and set the intensity levels manually to get the colors you want.
Either way the costs add up, not to mention the time involved.
