I get all of my cords from Lowes, but a lot of people use zip cord and vampire plugs to make their own ext. cords.

Good place to get the idea of how you make the cords:

And to see all the parts on one page:

Otherwise I watch at garage sales for used cords, and usually hit it big at Target after Christmas. Target is the only place I have found that clearances their green cords after Christmas--usually starting about 50% off, then 75% off, and eventually 90% off. Last year I got an entire shopping cart full of cords for 75% off. The teen cashier girl thought it was hilarious, but loved that I was getting a great deal once she heard what they were for. Got 6', 9', 15' indoor cords, and lots of green outdoor cords (15', 22', 40', including some with triple taps at the ends). Also got some outdoor timers and such clearanced also .

ebay is a good place I got 300 feet of spt-2 wire for 30 bucks so 10cents a foot, I did a lot of google searches and found many places that sell cords and plug ends. the best thing is to shop around maybe the site you find will have a sale.

Another place that some use is : http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/lampcord.aspx
Click on the various ones since they offer quantity discounts.

Also I bought from here this year:
http://www.grandbrass.com (search for spt wire)
I got brown wire ecopacks (no spool) for 250ft for $22.50 (4+). Their supply changes.

Where do you all buy your extension cords? There has to be a better place than Home Depot?!

Price-wise I think ANY place is better than Home Depot. Your name block doesn't say where in the country or the world you live, but if you're anywhere near a Menard's keep your eyes open for their sales - earlier this year they were selling 6' cords for 79 cents and 9' ones for 99 cents.

I've calculated that for anything up to 15' it's a lot cheaper (to the tune of half the price) shopping big box store sales rather than making them yourself. Once you get up past 15' it starts getting cheaper making your own - not to mention being able to make them exactly the length you need.

Here in Texas I've found that the HEB grocery store chain has good prices.

I might have to start making my own this year though.

If you use spt 1 wire, Home Depot has an online sale only for plugs in about October for I think $35.00 for 100 plugs, used them last year, no problem at all with them.

Wow! I'm tired of new people not searching the forum for their answers! This is and old outdated topic, that I know if they only search "extension cords, or SPT", There is over 475 combined topics that cover this!

Do we really need another?

I'm not tryng to be a party pooper, but People need to SEARCH!

Apparently 7 other people (above) felt it was a reasonable question and didn't seem too bothered to help out. Sorry that you were--I would suggest you avoid the newbies forum then. Difficult to search for SPT when you possibly don't even know about making cords yourself. And when you search for "extension cords" and find 412 matches, very few of them have anything to do with actual extension cords and in particular where to get better deals for them as dcarter4 asked (in the Newbies forum no less). The first one that does is on page 3 of the results and is from a thread in 2008. I hope that we have found better deals or alternative sources since then.
You might want to go through your history of posts and of threads started and see how many of them should have had your same comments above applied to them. (Trust me, I did, and ironically, a few of them sound pretty similar to the question asked in this thread, with regards to C9 sockets and SPT1 plugs).

Now back to our regular scheduled programming...:?

I wasn't going to jump in here but....

#1. the Search feature here is sometimes quite useless when attempting find information.

#2. The question on where to buy extension cords does have a lot of other threads, this is true, HOWEVER, many are over a year old and as everyone here should be aware, PRICES CHANGE CONSTANTLY as do websites, so what may have been relevant in 2006, 2007, 2008....2010, MAY NOT be relevant at the time of thier NEW POST in 2011.

I know several places I purchased items from in 2009 and 2010, no longer carry those items at all. So I see no harm in anyone, even the old timers re-requesting where the best deals are for items they may be looking for.

That's what this forum IS supposed to be about, but sure has, of late, taken a turn for the worse in my opinion!

Your jargon is not necessary.

Oh.... by the way. Before you go ripping my pictures for use on your website, you better ask! Here's one of mine (strobes) on your website: http://www.poestenkill-lights.com/gallery.php

Strobe2.jpg

I can reconize my writing on those strobes. The white strobes are from Paul Sessel that's marked 2011 so they aren't mixed up with last year's.
