  1. My wife convinced me that a few days on the beach Christmas week would do me good. After 30 seconds or so of kicking and screaming I agreed to go. So, will be on Fort Myers Beach 12/20-12/23. Thought I might take a ride around and check out a few warm weather displays while I was there. Any suggestions for displays in the Fort Myers area?
  2. I think Don used the .5 amps per strobe instead of per 10 strobes. 6 watts per strobe would be .05 amps per strobe. Oilmoney is correct in the math. 100 strobes would consume 5 amps. If you maxed out your single channel at 8 amps you could run 160 strobes. That's a lot of strobes. I run a few channels with 40 strobes and have had no problems.

I have thought this through over and over and have come to the conclusion that making custom length cords with SPT and vampire plugs and bundling them together like a cable is more cost effective and convinient. The cost of heavy gauge multi-conductor cable plus the weatherproof connectors to go with them add up pretty quick. Then you still have the breakout box to construct. SPT zip tied together makes a pretty nice "snake"
  4. Easy way to check. Plug the lights in and wave them back and forth at arms length in front of you. If they leave a strobe like on-off light trail they are half wave. If they leave a solid light trail they are full wave. Might be easier to see in the dark.
  5. Boost converters for LED drivers are fairly common. I am not very familiar with them, but would expect them to work fine in the application as long as the components were able to handle the current needed to switch the boot circuit on. I am not sure about the power on time for the circuit, but even a slow power on time in the millisecond (0.001s) range would be imperceivable to us. Can you make out a chip number on the boost circuit? Should be an IC, an inductor, a capacitor, a diode, and a couple resistors. 12V in 34V out at 1 amp or better.
  6. +1 on the 50 gallon trash cans on wheels. I use 30 gallon trash cans without wheels and they get pretty heavy. SPT cords mostly stored in totes.
  7. If you just want a couple floods and/or wall washers you can use "dumb" RGB lights and a LOR DC controller. Skip the DMX all together. These daisy chain with LOR controllers and talk LOR.
  8. I used these on 12 controllers. Worked great in year 1. Second year I had issues with water getting in and not being able to get out. Made for some interesting communications between controllers and a few nights out in the cold bypassing them. Bypassed them all by the end of the year. I have to take a closer look, but my guess is that thermal cycling through a couple years caused the heatshrink to lose it's seal allowing water to run down the cable and into the connection. I am going to seal the heatshrink end of the connectors with silicone and leave some out for a few months before I use them again next year. When working, these are great.
  9. Greg I agree that most internal sound cards are decent. In many cases, especially with laptops, you are using a headphone jack for audio output, not a line out. Many times the headphone output is the week link. I offer the Behinger an inexpensive solution to failing sound cards or headphone jacks, but would also consider it for a replacement of on board audio in some cases. For one, the line out from the UCA222 makes it more difficult to overdrive the audio into the transmitter. I don't know if it's Behringer's background in signal processing or what, but the output of this ran straight to an EDM transmitter gives me more of a "radio station" sound than I ever got from a stock laptop sound card and headphone jack, or desktop for that matter. I don't know if they are using compression/limitting or what. It just sounds good for cheap. I bought this to use as a sound card for a server (no on board sound) and was so impressed that I moved it over to a laptop that I had marginal results with on board sound running through a transmitter. Played with all the sound settings, used several different attenuators, and still marginal sound. Plugged the UCA222 into a USB port, conneted to the EDM with a RCA cable, and instantly had great transmitted sound. No drivers, no power supplies, no hassle.
  10. I import all CCR/Pixel sequences to a seperate track set up specifically for the CCR channels to be imported.

  13. Most incan rope light can be cut at 18" to 24" lengths. The big box store rope light probably doesn't have these intervals marked. Look at the wires inside the rope light. There should be two wires connecting each bulb. If you look closely, you will find a place where it looks like there is a jumper between the wires - usually, but not always, every 18". You can cut the rope between the lights that the jumper is between. Anywhere else you will ruin that section of lights. It might help to hold a flashlight against the rope light to see the wires better.
