  1. This is standard pex piping. It's translucent, not clear. You should be able to find it at most home improvement stores.

  3. There are some additional features that the Enttec PRO has, such as supporting DMX input and being able to change the timing of the DMX signal, that I believe, S3 doesn't do. However, be aware that you can't turn OFF the microprocessor in the PRO model. So, yes, it won't do any more than the Open device will do in terms of DMX output, but it will still be doing the creation of the DMX signal. The PRO won't depend on the computer to send the break signal at the right time to get the DMX packet right. It will do that automatically. That is something the Open model just can't do.
  4. When in doubt, use the default Utility that came with the Enttec device. It can turn on/off DMX channels. That can verify your connections, both to the dongle, and to the lights/controllers. Then you can tackle any issues with how S3 changes things, knowing that your connections/controllers are OK. Just some suggestions from someone who has done it before....both on a stage and in the yard.
  5. You can get a good deal that is somewhat cheaper than full retail from some of the resellers that Enttec uses in the US and elsewhere. I'm not at home where I can look, but some theatre places online had decent prices. Look at Stage Research and Production Advantage. Also zzSound.com Those are just a few names I can drag up on short notice.
  6. While some folks may differ with me, I always prefer to warn folks that choose to use a "non-intelligent" RS485 adapter (like the USB485 and Enttec Open USB) to send out DMX to controllers. The DMX protocol runs at a higher baud rate and usually is continuously sending data out to DMX devices. Therefore, it's somewhat sensitive to timing issues. Given the non-intelligent adapters depend on the computer to send the right signals at the right time, if your computer gets overloaded or is a slower box and doesn't have much headroom on CPU horsepower, you could have lights out of sequence. The beauty of the Enttec DMX PRO is that the CPU inside the dongle does all the hard work of getting the DMX timing right, and will repeat the most recent DMX levels without any input from the computer. The same thing applies to the Lynx dongle and some of the DIY DMX dongles as well. Yes, it costs more, but it's worth it in reliability. So, as they say, "Your mileage may vary" This isn't a slam on any piece of hardware, but understanding how things work may help you figure out what is happening out in your yard. DMX, being a new beast for many, just has some differences from standard LOR communication between computer and controller.
  7. I certainly don't want to re-open this can of worms, but I'd like to understand why some of the "dumb" dongles don't work either. For the Enttec DMX Pro, and Lynx dongle, and the DIYC RPM dongles, there's a PIC that does the timing and generates a "valid" DMX packet. For the Enttec DMX Open, the LOR RS485, and dmoore's programmer dongle, it's the driver in the PC that generates the datastream - the HW just does a level conversion from the USB serial input to RS485 output. So my guess is that whatever driver is being used has to interpret the serial stream, including break characters or pad characters or whatever to correctly build a DMX packet. It may be that the driver chosen or automatically installed for the FTDI USB interface could be different between the LOR dongle and others. Given that the USB VID/PID can be different, a different driver could get loaded for each, and if the driver doesn't send out the right bits at the right time, then the DMX output will be wrong. It could be an interesting experiment to "patch" the driver that comes with the LOR dongle to get loaded for another USB dongle and see if the behavior is different. I believe the start of the DMX packet is a "break" signal of a specific time, and then the data starts a certain time later. If the timing is off, then the target DMX device may not "be listening" soon enough for the first channel data, and so starts responding to the channel 2 data as if it were channel 1. This also means that the device at DMX channel 512 may not respond to that channel's data value. Again, whether it's the driver at fault, or something in the dongle that alters the timing, you can't fault S3 too much.
  8. There are several DMX-> GE controllers that have been developed over on DIYC. Jim St John's E680/681 is just such one of those... To the original poster, the GE pixels have their own protocol - there's not an LOR controller that can drive them directly that's available today. In the future - who knows?   9. SPT and most of the SPT based extension cords should be good up to 7A. That's about 800 watts. Not sure what each channel on the controller will handle, but you should be good. Note that this is from your controller to the lights. You should be using a heavy duty extension cord to go from your power outlet to the controller. Mark
  10. Just be aware - I don't know what S3 will support. Some rumblings posted in various places are saying that S3 will be supporting native DMX in some way, but not E1.31 at first release. Until it shows up, or you get Dan or someone from LOR to confirm officially, all bets are off. I don't want to be accused of starting ANY rumors, even though Mr. Bottomley and I live within an hour of each other, and occasionally talk on the phone...
  11. E1.31 is, essentially, DMX over Ethernet. So for S3 to support E1.31, it needs to be putting out DMX protocol commands over an Ethernet port via IP. Which means that S3 needs to be able to put out native DMX over any kind of port, such as a DMX dongle. So, S3 needs to support native DMX output, rather than just LOR protocol output. If S3 will output DMX, then it is possible for it to support E1.31. None of this will make it any easier or not easier for a given situation. If you have DMX based fixtures, such as moving lights or a DMX controller, and are now using an iDMX, then if S3 outputs DMX, you could just move the DMX devices off the iDMX and connect them to a DMX dongle. Or if you had a E1.31->DMX gateway and S3 supports E1.31, you could just connect the gateway to your home Ethernet network and S3 could put output via the Ethernet port on your computer. There are several DIY E1.31->DMX gateways available and lots of commercial ones as well. Expect to pay upwards of $500 for the commercial ones, much less for the DIY variety. Hope this helps, Mark

  13. Got my shipping notice today - place a TFF order on 7/13. Will see if I won when I get the package. An older note from July said that they would charge the card and then refund it later if you won TFF, but not sure...
  14. I think it varies as to where stuff is out or not... My local Lowes has Halloween and was fairly well along last weekend in getting Christmas stuff on the shelves. I was in a HD about 30 miles away yesterday, and there was no sign of any Christmas anywhere that I looked.
