Something I have noticed.. about sharing things.

Has anyone else noticed that when you say you have something to share or that you have worked on a new seq there is a long line of people asking for it but then when you share it very few ever say thanks after they get it and also that most of the ones asking for the shared things never seem to have anything to share in return, and that most of them are the same ones over and over all the time?

Just seems to be something I noticed..

Many of us have spent a lot of hours and time doing things that we don't mind sharing and most of the time no all but more people do not ever say thanks for sharing it or say ow they liked or didn't like it or offer any constructive criticism or there version of the same thing after tweaking it??..

Even a newbie like I am would like to receive a little pat on the back once in a while..

And I am sure there are a lot that have shared things here that does a much better job then I do have not been told thanks for a lot of their hard and time consuming work to.

Many times in different places...

I say thank you for the help that all the old timers and to all who have helped me in the past... and that still help me pout when I am having a problem with something..

and to all the ones who have shared their work with me.

There are some people ready to jump in and criticize someone for asking about something that was answered three or four of even 5 years ago instead of offering a good explanation or telling them where it was answered in the past...

Not Everyone uses the same terminology when searching for something and there are some who always seems to be ready to say.... search harder... it was answered way back in 2010 if you look for it....

When I get a sequence via email, I make the effort to say thanks back.

I think it's just the climate we are now in.  Growing lack of courtesy. weakening communication skills, growing entitlement, and just plan lack of common sense.

I know I give away a fair amount of stuff on Craigslist lsit.  Disappointing in the number of "no-shows".  People who want stuff, say they are coming and never show and never an email that they have changed their mind.

I'm pushing 60 so have been around long enought to see how society is changing and generally not for the good.

I know how that is to... I am 61, retired military so have a lot of time to play with LOR try to make sequences and to tweak some that have been shared with me, etc.

I to have posted things on craigs for free to have people say I want it I will be over or meet you at ---- to take it off your hand to have them never show up...

Or at the last minute after you have told some others you have a taker to not show up or change their mind.

I have noticed a lot of people here who have been members for years asking for free sequences but Haven't seen most say they have some to share in return...

There are some listed here in the last couple days as example... some have been on LOR for 4 plus years.... But Just ask for things and says nothing at all about sharing what they have on their list already...

Makes a lot of people like me who will share anything and even have made some because someone asked for something using my super star etc. feel like stopping all sharing of things to most people..

I know there are some old timers who are always willing to help people and many share things and just ask that you dont share them in return because they also sale them... I can fully understand that, especially after seeing how many people just ask for more and more like I have been seeing in the last few months....

I only got into LOR barely in time for Halloween last year..

I have always shared what I could with others mainly because of the help I got when I first came here looking for help.

Can I make a suggestion here, please?

Rather than focus on what you didn't receive (thanks), why not focus on why you gave in the first place?

Learning to give without strings, even strings as insignificant as a thank you, is a much more rewarding experience.

The giving is the part that should make you feel good, not the receiving of a thank you.

There will always be ungrateful, forgetful, or ill-manored people in the world.  When you understand that your gift to the unappreciating is just as valuable as your gift to someone who shows appreciation, all those negative feelings go away.

Don't share if you expect a thank-you.  Share because the act itself is right and feels good.

so does that mean if I want to buy something and then in turn share it with others without asking for anything in return for it, it then should and is ok for me to do that...

and like I said... I share what I have done and what others have told me that it is ok to share....

But I do not share all which has been sent to me, as some have asked me not to.

Anyone that has shared with me, and to anyone that hasn't:  I have been thinking about this for a bit, and was not really sure it was a good idea, but...... I am/will be adding RGB pixels (house trim and windows) to any sequence shared with me. Not really sure anyone would want the modified sequence, since I have learned that RGB is really kind of a custom thing to each house, but I am more than willing to (re) share it when I'm done. I am very close to finishing up a few that were shared here.  My concern comes from the fact that every sequence I have has been "created" by someone else. I usually start with a simple shared, or purchased sequence that has basic sequencing done (timing, beats, and 16 or so channels, some of which I use, and some I don't), and I build/modify/add to it from there to fit my display/home. Time being a precious thing to me, this saves me the basic grunt work of getting the basics set up. Thus, I am not always sure when it becomes "my" sequence, and not the creation of someone elses work. At what point can I say "this is mine to share"? Also, will the original creator that shared the sequence be insulted when I re-share it, and have ended up using very little of the sequence they put work into? As I said, I have a couple that I'm very close to finishing up that I would love to share, and figured I will try posting them soon and see how it goes.

On a side note:

Sarge, thank you for the files you have shared with me. I usually try to post a "thank you" in the threads.  I see you were looking for "I put a spell on you". I was gonna message you that I have a sequence for it, but it doesn't have the introduction lines from the movie you mentioned, so I figured it wouldn't fit what you wanted. I guess you could edit it to fit, but it may be a pita.  It's yours if you want it, just let me know. I will also be modding it for RGB soon.

both you and sarge and a couple of others [james matt and I know theier are others I am forgetting] are the cream of the crop and we I am including others do appreciate your work.

I am sitting here working on [somebody I use to know ] part of which I received from the forum and the other 32 channels I spent all afternoon on. I do not compare my work to yours, that is why I appreciate any help I can get.

once again a thank you to anyone who has shared with anyone.

Thank You Sarge       Does anyone have a vixen to lor converter so I can share back?

This will be my 9th year doing LOR I think... LOL .. I always try to say Thank You and even call to thank them for sharing. I have shared plenty of what I have created. I know they get excited to get it and start their sequence and may forget to say thanks. Most the time I thank them in the email in advance. This is one hobby I have enjoyed and I try not to miss a request. Grant that most my sequence have certain parts that are paid for and I will remove those sections unless the owner of that sequence tells me its ok to send them out.

Craftylag- I will send you a message with my number so we can discuss vixen to LOR converter. I did one two years ago and it worked well.

I am far from being one of the cream of the crops as you put it..

I just started LOR last year barely in time for Halloween.. I just usually have a lot of time on my hands so I spend a lot of it on LOR stuff..

I try to play with and learn to use all the tools, beat wiz, etc. as well as the Super Star Sequencer.

I have also read other post from a few years ago here  somewhere..

I cant remember where where it was actually a old timer here who was also talking about how and why he stopped sharing things and started usually charging for them... It was for the main things I mentioned.

I am not searching for others to share... just having kids myself and grand-kids I know it is sometime the responsibility of others to remind a FEW how it is always better to have good manners and say THANK YOU and YOUR WELCOME..

After all... isn't that something all or us or most of us try to teach our kids and grand-kids as they grow up??

I know there are many out there who think the WORLD OWES them.... But there are many more who do not don't think that way..

And the ones who say thanks and your welcome know who they are and they know its not them being talked about but there are many who never say thanks, or your welcome or anything other then I Want...

They are the ones who need to try to think back to the lessons that were tried to be taught to them as they were growing up.

With almost 33 years in the Military... I have even seen GENERALS in the Army saying THANK YOU to the privates way down under them.... and they don't have to say thank you to anyone... but it is JUST GOOD MANNERS.

And thats a good question as to when do you know it is something you can share...

I would think that when it is over 75% your work it should be ok... By that I mean.... example... if you have 120 channels and someone send you something that you only use maybe 8 or 16 channels from and then you use it in a different way then they did then it should be now considered as yours...

example... 2 (8) channel archs changed and used as a 16 channel tree.... because you got to realize.... with so many people working on the same songs... there is bound to be some things that are the same in them... but maybe just used in a different place...

Of people using the Super Star Sequencer.... isnt there a good possibility that it can make the same thing maybe just on a different prop?

So... when is it decided that a seq totally belongs to someone?

Was something I hadnt thought of before... but someone above here mentioned it.

I stopped openly sharing when

1- I found my sequence for sale on eBay

2- people re-sharing it claiming to be theirs.

Sucks that a few bad apples ruin it for the rest, starting out is always tough but there is a lot already available to get the hang of it.

I also have wondered if the mass sharing is limiting creativity.

It may be... I have often wondered also why it seems to be that it is usually the same song you see over and over.... well... not shows but usually the same music by the same composer/singer..

I kinda thought after I was working on a couple that I hadnt seen posted anywhere that I found a couple new ones....

Then I found out they were already done by someone also..

One of them being Silent Night by the Temptations for singing faces.... another was Hocus Pocus ( I Put A Spell On You.). Bett Milder version singing faces..

I have also done Ava Maria ( in German) singing faces which I haven't seen anywhere else yet.. and Dominique.. by The Singing Nun.... I remember when that was a big hit all over.. ( Not Telling My True Age Here)...LOL

And believe it or not.... My Dads Cousin (Debbie Reynolds) made a Movie about her...

I can fully understand your frustration at seeing your work being sold by someone else.. But the way things are today I ant really imagine with all the people who share things that there would really be a market for them...

I do understand about it being a lot of work to make etc.... But cant people find almost anything now days for free on the internet ... even just released movies are usually for free if you search the right place within a few hours after it is shown at a theater??

i never worry about the "thank yous" coming from someone I have shared with or even programmed for, its not why i do it ( although I do say thank you myself and usually return a sequence I have done for one that is sent to me ), I share or even offer to sequence for others because I know that its not for the person who is doing the shows or asking for the sequences, its for the public, especially the kids who get to enjoy the shows. So what if someone else takes the credit, as long as I have made a persons holiday season, a person whom I will never meet and a person who will certainly never know me or that I even had anything to do with the "blinky lights" they so much enjoyed, thats good enough for me and will keep me doing this for as long as I am able to. I live in a small town so our audience is somewhat limited, maybe 20 one night or a hundred another night. But when i share with another enthusiast, I feel in some small way that I have made the holiday season for those who don't even live around me. I have the power through sharing to touch thousands of people just by the simple act of sharing, and that is what the holiday spirit is all about.

Sharing is all fine and good but you can not put a percentage on what makes it yours.  It is never truly yours unless you have 100% created it.    If I share a sequence, I tell them that I purchased the work and I an to inept to create a complicated sequence on my own.

Exactly what I was thinking... So I am going to see how many buttons I can push to get peoples blood pressure up now...lol

Doesn't the government have patient laws or what ever the laws are that cover songs... wouldn't sequences be covered under the same copyright laws?

I share everything I do but I do not share what I have been asked not to..

I don't search for compliments on them either.. but I do like some creative good critisim.

It is just I have noticed that SOME PEOPLE on the Forums never seem to say thanks for  anything to anyone or compliment anyone else's work...

a few seem to just criticize most things they see... Like they think theirs are always perfect in every way or that they are to good or it is below them to do so.

And they are sometime the first really quick to come up with reasons they believe are legitimate to not say thanks or to say they like something someone else has done, but are really there when they can say something needs to be changed or added at the same time.

I know many out there on the forums have never been in the military, never been to any type of leadership schools or self improvement classes but there are many people who know even when you are talking to someone about a bad job they are doing at work at anything there should be at least one thing you can say good to that person... if not then why is he/she still working there anyway?

I hope I have open a bucket of worms here for people to start talking about.... LOL... not that I really care about the self centered people who can only still just think of themselves and think they above the common courtesies of saying thank you , your welcome, nice job, or maybe you can add something like, etc..

but seem to just always have something negative to say about anyone or everyone else because they have no manners, especially if the other person does not agree with them..  reminds me of the Republicans and Democrats...lol..
