FM Transmitter "fuzz" and other difficulties

Good Evening All,

I hooked up my FM transmitter (the one from LOR website) and have tried every channel that is "available" and it is still fuzzy  if I am more than 20 feet away from the antenna.  I have had more success with the long flexible antenna.  My first question is what would you suggest I try? and is there an antenna you would suggest? Additionally, I am trying to take video and want to have the best sound, any suggestions?  I thought I could video from my car, but I can't get far enough away to actually "see" the display and still hear the radio...

I am sure there is probably a simple solution to this, but I do not know what it is.

Thanks for all of your help,

Roberta

I'm not sure to be honest what LOR is selling these days for an FM transmitter.  I can say I bought their whole house transmitter 8 years ago when I first started and I had the same issues as you.  I ended up connecting the transmitter out side to a controller that a director built in to it and it did work a little better but the bottom line that ( and this is just my opinion) LOR transmitters are sold in the store for convenience and are not the best at all.  In my second year I bought a Ramsey FM25B transmitter and still use this same one today. It works flawlessly! There are quite a few out there that work very well.  Every LOR product (with the exception of the FM transmitter) has been top notch and are top quality.

Thanks for your response.  I saw on another post about FM Transmitters the same one you are using.  I might have to look into that.  Sucks that I just bought this and it really doesn't work.  Fortunately I live in the middle of nowhere and can crank speakers as I wish.  Nearest neighbor is 2/3 mile or so away... So if they start complaining, I have problems...

Sadly the one that LOR sells isn't a very good transmitter. I've seen many reports of issues with them. Check out the cze-05b transmitter. I bought one for my show this year and its works wonderfully on the .1w power setting. I have had zero issues with it. Bought it on a recommendation in another thread around here somewhere.

Thanks. I really wish I would have asked more questions before this purchase. I have always had such good luck with LOR products that I never considered otherwise. Thanks for your suggestions.

I fell victim to this poor product TODAY!!!!!!.  I purchased it and it lasted a few days and now the left channel has died.  At first I thought it was just the bad cable that came with it.  However, I tested the cable on another piece of audio equipment and the cable checks out just fine.  I am extremely disappointed in the quality of this product.

I am going to purchase this one from Amazon:

check your return status. LOR is very good about returns/warranty. At least that has been my recent experience with them.

And from what I've seen in these forums over the years, I'll bet they've got plenty of experience processing transmitter returns.

Also try eBay for the CZH-05b, I picked one up for a little over $40. It's been working great so far.

That's what I just got but it cost me 80. You you have it set to low? Any FCC concerns?

The low setting should work just fine, that's how I'm running it. No FCC concerns here, shouldn't be an issue as far as I know.

It looks like the one you got is a new version with the RCA connections, mine doesn't have that. I think you'll have much better reception and audio quality out of it, I know it works a million times better for me. I'm really happy with it.

Of course... I threw out the box, hmmmm.... What an idiot I am...  I ordered the other one based upon all of your suggestions (thank you).  Hopefully it will be here by Monday like they say... I'm guessing Tuesday at the earliest, but no matter.  It will be better than the one I have..  I am trying to upload some videos to youtube so I can share what I am doing, but slow, slow, slow....  Thanks for all of your help.  I did get "My kind of night" sequenced.  That is my son's favorite.

I actually ordered the non-working one directly from SourceFM and have to get an RMA number from them Monday.  I hope that goes well.  I will be out shipping and handling but other than that, it's better than having one channel not transmitting.

My new transmitter comes today (see the one I ordered above).  I will let you you all know how that one works out. All the reviews for the one I ordered seem to be high so hopefully this is a much better experience.   I will know tonight.

My kind of night sequence:

Here is the sequence I did for my son.. Don't be too critical of the tree.. I only had 3 channels to utilize:)

Thanks for all the advice regarding transmitters. I hope to have the new one tomorrow:)

Thanks again!

I received mine today.  I have a question.  What setting won't get me in trouble?  The FS CZH-05B unit has both a H (.5w) and L (.1w) setting.

Use Low to avoid FCC issues.

Low should only transmit for a block or two until it becomes fuzzy.

Be very conscious of the frequency you broadcast on too, obviously.  Don't broadcast over a station, use empty space on the dial and give yourself room near the station in case of any bleed over (i adjusted the output level to prevent bleeding onto other stations with good success).
