Cut CCR into two units?

Hello,

Bit of a newbie here!  I've purchased a CCR with an additional CCR control unit, with plans to cut the CCR into two (realizing this voids the warranty) and run it as two separate shorter CCRs.

My question is:  What is the best way to craft a new pigtail connector for the second short CCR?  Best place to purchase the appropriate connector to plug into the control box?

Thanks!

Just got these from mouser's electronics phone number 8178043800  here is the part number there is two parts that make up the  holder 538 43645 04000 and here is the part number for the 22 gauge wire you have to crimp these and set them into the holder # 538 43030 0010  I thought they were one piece no two separate pieces  very helpful people good to deal with  if you look on you wire attached to the ribbon you will see 22gauge

Thanks!  I am assuming that my plan will actually work.....that by using a separate CCR control box I can in effect make two shorter CCRs from one.

If you wire it correctly there's no reason why it shouldn't work.  I've done it, and if I can so can you.

Sysco:  What is the Mouser part number for the actual 22 gauge wire?

Don731, I've cut a number of CCR ribbons in half to create smaller arches for my Christmas show. I put together a step by step illustrated guide on how to cut and wire the ribbons. If you're not making half arches like I do, you can skip the later part of instructions on making the arches. I hope this helps.

Hank, Just want to say thanks so much for sharing your tutorial. It has been most helpful my friend.

With the amount of people cutting or wanting to cut their CCRs it looks like LOR could benefit from selling different size Ribbons with male and female connectors. Is there a need for such? What do you guys think?

Ron.

Hank,

As I just told Ron Boyd in another thread, it's people like you as to why I joined the LOR forums. After reading your in depth instructions for cutting CCR's, I need to say thanks for taking the time to share it. I love my display, but with info like yours, I'm planning to jump to CCD's for my 2015 display. I know all the help I will ever need will be here.

Oh yeah - & the freaking BBQ grill doubling as a PVC forming machine is insanely deep insight!

Wow this is a great step-by-step guide and the information can be applied to many other things besides CCR's. Thank you!

For cutting the ribbon, your instructions show how to unsolder the area and then cut the area.  My LOR ribbons have areas that do not have solder but are labeled as cut points by the image of scissors and the users manual calls these cut points.  Anyone have experience with this style or cutting at this location that does not require de soldering?  Is this a new style of ribbon?

Thanks

Just cutting at that point is all you need to do after you cut and if you want to solder wires on just add a drop of solder to each pad

@Sean,

If you're absolutely certain that you're at the correct cut point then Larry is right. Just cut it at that point using a scissors. For a proper soldering, you need to coat the copper pads on the ribbon with solder and also the wires separately first. That's called "wetting." Then, placing the wires on the pads and reheat with the soldering iron. The two should join easily. Good luck.

Hank,

I know this is one year later, but this is the first time I went looking for help with cutting and splicing CCRs.  Thanks very much for the excellent guide for cutting and splicing CCRs.  Your instructions could not be more clear, including both the text and the pictures.

I'll follow your instructions closely, as I prepare my first CCR arches for 2016.

Ed
