caniac Posted June 22, 2011 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Creating my firesticks and started with 2" PVC, seemed like a good idea until i put on my 70ct LED's and on a one foot section I will need two strands (don't want to go there). Next up I take 1 1/2 PVC and cut it to 11", seemed like a good idea but i am 4" short of LED's. Next up is a piece of 1" PVC cut to 12".The strand is 24' in length.Help? Advice? jimswinder Posted June 22, 2011 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Are you looking for your lights to cover a certain length? like 12"?Are you needing to use a specific diameter of PVC (1-1/2", 2", 1". 3'4")Or are you needing to know how much length a 70ct LED string will cover?the latter question depends on how tight you wrap it and of course the diameter..I would take a fresh piece of pipe and BEFORE you cut it to length, wrap your lights a few different times and see what the AVERAGE length is that you come up with...Also...if you take the circumference of the pipe, you can figure out (at least close) how much length the strand will give you...2" PVC pipe schedule 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 2" and outside diameter of 2-3/8". (Circumference of 7.46128) So if I did the math correct, you can wrap it about 38 times...so if you wanted it to fit onto a 12" piece, each "wrap" would need to take up about 5/16" of an inch...1.5" PVC pipe sch 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 1.5" and an outside diameter of 1-7/8". (Circumference of 5.89048)1" PVC pipe schedule 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 1" and outside diameter of 1-1/4". I used c6 70 count led's and the pipe looks like its 2" pvc with the bulbs sticking out.I have to slide it onto a 1/2" Galvanized pipe to keep it from bending with the weight of the cords, lights and starburst on top. MikeH Posted June 22, 2011 Share Posted June 22, 2011 What kind of lights are you using (mini's, c7, c9)? I have found that instead of using pvc pipe for the segments, I use pipe insulation. It's a 6 foot long foam tube available at HD or Lowe's or any hardware store. No need for zip ties. You can wrap it randomly so that it will not fall into a pattern and it won't slide. No need to wrap it tightly or closely. I use seven 17" segments on a 10' X 1" pvc schedule 40. The foam insulation bends with the pole if you're making arches. Up close and in the light it looks like there is a lot of spacing, but in the dark with the lights moving you can't tell there is space between the lights. LOL :P:PSome great answers here all depends on waht style lights you use and how you wrap them, as for hieght the sky is the limit (I guess you would need an awful lot of controllers for this) but any hieght is good some have different hieghts at 3 feet 4 feet 5 feet ect. ect experiment and have fun.
