I plan on playing with a servo dog board for next year's show. Being a newbie with animatronics, which would I choose ..analog or digital servos? Where would I use each?

Depending on the capabilities, a digital servo can be programmed with limits and speed, home position etc. An analog relies on the settings of the controller to perform these things. When using them with a Servodog, either can be used. Both are inexpensive, so you pick and choose based on your needs. I have a single digital device for an animated Mrs Santa's mouth. It's fragile and needs to have a specific limit to keep from breaking plastic. An analog connected to a Servodog, and the end of seq. off command almost cost me a Mrs Santa. The off is switchable now, so there are still options.

Thanks Jeff. I hadn't thought about the home position situation. I may use digital as an insurance policy when the show ends.

Digital will tend to hold it's position better than an analog.  R/C modelers that have larger and/or high performance aircraft and helicopters swear by digital.  They do, however, use more power - for our use, that's not a big deal, but in a model aircraft with a battery pack, it does make a big difference.  Also, for our use, getting servos with metal gears is essential, otherwise you'll be stripping the plastic gears left and right.

You can see a good selection of servos at Tower Hobbies.

I'm using standard metal gear servos on a ServoDog.

Here is another great source for Servo related items.

How far from the controller (servo dog) can a servo operate?
Not wireless, but hard wired.
thanks
